Listen To Me

Listen To Me is a game by Kevin Li with images from 3dworldmag and deviant art.

Goal

I wanted to create a simple game where the player acts on sound prompts instead of visual prompts. Failure to do so will mean failing the game. I got the idea from an episode of Batman Beyond. Terry is under the effect of hallucinations so Bruce tells him to ignore everything he sees and just listen to Bruce's voice commands.

Method

I used a first person view and the backdrop of a haunted house with ghosts flying around. The ghosts actually have nothing to do with anything but they are there just for the idea that you aren't supposed to believe what you see in this game. I used pictures of my arms to create a basic first person view and recorded my voice for the audio cues. I use OpenAL and ALUT for the playback.

Novelty

The novelty is that you have to LISTEN TO ME (hey! that's the name of the game!) in order to win. Also the "yay" sound that's played when you successfully block is pretty awesome.

Results

I think the basic mechanics work for a simple game, but I would've liked to add a lot more stuff. Specifically I would have liked to add a lot more false visual cues to try to get the player to act. For example, maybe tell the player to attack even if the player's health is depleting on screen.
